Essential oils are naturally forming chemicals that plants produce as part of their defense system. They can come from the leaves, twigs, stems, roots, flowers, blossoms, or fruits. About 15% of plants produce essential oils and only about 5% are good for aromatherapy. Natural essential oils are very complex - one oil can be comprised of up to 350 individual, naturally forming chemicals. Synthetic fragrance oils just can’t compare to essential oils. It’s not the odor that you need for aromatherapy, it’s the physiochemical characteristics present in the natural essential oil.
As a Certified Aromatherapist, I have heard about esssential oils being used for a variety of physical and mental ailments. They can be used either topically - by rubbing them into the skin using a carrier/massage oil, or by inhalation - such as putting a few drops on a tissue and inhaling the aroma.
